Consciousness: Mind and Machine

A popular idea today-is the notion of the ghost in the machine. From science to entertainment, this reference is to the idea of consciousness. Once again, the study of consciousness is occupying the minds of science and science fiction.

Just after turn of the century, science basically abandoned the study of consciousness itself "on the basis that it was too ambiguous and unquantifiable. However, development artificial intelligence, called teams to think, interactive virtual reality environments and non-local action, or action at a distance, has put the study of consciousness on the front front of many minds.

What is consciousness? This issue is dedicated to some of the intrigue involved in efforts to create "Thinking machines" model of man, except, of course, its limitations.

EARLY TALK

Language is often thought to be the tool of consciousness and evidence for the kind of consciousness that makes man different from the apes. Indeed, language has been referred to as the "jewel of cognition." Some Scientists have argued that Neanderthals were capable of speaking advanced. This assertion is based mainly on a collar bone in 1988 (SN: 4/24/93, p.262). Other scientists argue for a more recent origin speech. Recent in this regard is between 50 and 100 thousand years ago. By contrast, early theorists Origin date the beginning of the tongue by more than 2 million years.

The evolution and history of the language has an influence on certain philosophical issues where consciousness is concerned. For example, take any date for the first appearance of language. Let's just for fun take on some furry bi-pedal creature who has never spoken. Are you aware of this creature? Aware in the sense of man? Now a day the creature somehow pronounce the word significant. Not a growl or guttural sound like all animals, but are some from of the word. Is now the conscious animal?

What is the difference between consciousness animal and man? It seeks to distinguish between the two forms as different conscious and why? If a species of primates shows the ability to learn, remember and learning partners, some insist that this is a test for any reason. Most flatly refuse to recognize it as such. Is it possible to recognize the field of consciousness as a dignified and mature for her study, which mans consciousness' will lose its only high status? Which is precisely what one means by the consciousness of all anyway?

Indeed, the reason preceded language. It would be rather strange if it were the reverse. However, that's an interesting thought.

Some seem only reason the tools of their language. In other words, his right is limited by the rules and definitions of their language. Furthermore, some argument for the structure of language with certain powers or so to develop logical thinking. Literal languages, such as German, they tend to encourage the development of logical thinkers. However this may be intriguing, still evident that the reason preceded the conceptualization and development of speech. As such, it is very difficult to limit the awareness of a species on the basis of sound patterns called speech.

Oh, and it becomes even more difficult. Because there are sound patterns that resemble speech by non-conscious animals known as whales and dolphins. So what is consciousness?

Is consciousness a matter of waking? No, that can not be equal to one can be a conscious and still asleep. Memory Is consciousness? Well, agreement with the experiments of Cleve Baxter, plants exhibit memory. When science abandoned the study of consciousness for years, the problems inherent in the description awareness have proliferated in his absence. The advent of animal studies, studies of plants and man-made fibers intelligence have greatly complicated the matters of conscience. Or perhaps, alternatively, simplifying them.

Language and the Brain

For most people, parts left brain handle matters of language. Brain studies of the hemisphere including the now popular Positron Emission Tomography (PET) show that the ear acoustic information sent right to the left hemisphere. Well, according to Marc Hauser of Harvard University and Karin Andersson of Radcliff College, Cambridge, monkeys rhesus "show a configuration similar brain with the left half of the brain usually assumes the responsibility of vocalizations for the signal of aggression" (SN: 5/21/94, p333). If this is true, does this mean that the anatomical evidence for language processing is a test of consciousness in the sense that we normally think in the consciousness of humanity. If not, what are the differences?

CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE BRAIN

For many, the mind equals brain. The mind is a More generally it refers to the processes handled by the brain. Therefore, the mind is a term often interchangeable with consciousness. Is the mind like the brain? The main area of research offers evidence one way or another to this question is a discipline often referred to as poor. Even so, literally thousands of scientific parapsychology laboratory experiments show that there are many aspects of the mind that can not be reduced to the brain anatomical or material.

For example, data clearly supports the "reality" of telepathy, clairvoyance and psychokinesis. This seems obvious to this reviewer, but after the bios some of the most respected people in the world provide a rich image that found in science. However, the point is simple. Whether it is the genius of Einstein or the laboratory of a modern parapsychologist, the mind does not equal the brain! What does this mean with regard to consciousness?

A wonderful adventure Star Trek, as I recall the company had made the formation of his own conscience and then create a new life form. Somehow, as the lord of data, explained, the activity of computers on the ship and began taking records in a "more than the sum of its parts" activity, to form their own neural network and so on. Will machines ever become conscious?

Creatures evolve and learn SIMULATED

This was the headline in a recent publication Science News: Simulated Creatures evolve and learn. Richard Lipkin's article went on to cite the work of Karl Sims of Thinking Machines in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who "came up with an evolving system simulated in which virtual creatures compete for resources in a context in three dimensions … The creatures, similar block toy robots, enter one by one the competitions in vying for control of a desired object — an extra cube. Winners — — deems most suitable breed, while the losers have no descendants. Sims provides the virtual environment with physical parameters such as gravity and friction, and restricts the behavior plausible physical actions "(SN: 7/23/94, p63). Sims believes that it may be easier to evolve virtual entities with intelligent behavior to create them from scratch. artificial intelligence researchers have long sought to develop the thinking machine call. Unlike most Sims start by trying to model the team after the patterns of man. For some, this is the brain's neural model, while for others it is the deductive / inductive model of reason. Perhaps the method Sims is more man-like than the other two. Humanity are believed to have evolved. "This helps us to understand consciousness? Oh, and what about the collective consciousness? Will machines soon be contributing to this field of consciousness? Can a machine ever dreamed?

Dreams, intuition AND AWARENESS

The "hypothesis" Genius advanced by Ervin Laszlo and reported in the Journal of Scientific Exploration (Vol.8, No. 2, pp257-267, 1994), states that the minds "of people exceptionally creative are spontaneous, direct, although not usually aware, interaction with other minds in the creative process itself. "Laszlo paper sheds light on the experience, "archetype" described by Carl Jung in the use of history, physics, psychology, art and cultural production suggest clearly a strong possibility (in this commentators opinion, the only real possibility) that the minds not only communicate, but do so at a distance as well!

It is the collective, shared experience or awareness, self awareness? Can singular (individual) self-conscious entities participate as transceivers, send and receive, and that total is this collective consciousness? Does the group have a plan, a will, what makes you dream? Or is it just a repository? Do you have a neural network or something similar that might refer to as non-space field? I mean, is not organic or silicone?

CONSCIOUS AWARENESS

Perhaps consciousness is something that has to do with being aware of awareness. I mean, monkeys are really conscious of being conscious? They might even consider the idea of consciousness without an object? Or consciousness as a dream someone else's character? A mono wonder if they really exist?

Is that a good direction take the question on the conscience? After all, we are not likely to be forced to admit the concept of "devolution" if we do? Are not all together there are too many homo sapiens sapiens on the planet that do not give the proverbial "Hoot" about who they are or where they came from. How many of these people ask the question: "Does it really exist?" Will Silicone ask the question, "Who am I?" If the Japanese have their way, the response is probably —! A Darwin Machine "is being created by researchers from ATR Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan. The brain uses an artificial neural network in evolution is due to be completed by 2001. Hugo de Garis, an ATR scientist, says the purpose is to produce a silicon brain with more than 1 billion neurons artificial.

Science News says the machine "will come in the form of a neural network and exist within a massively parallel computer. To create a complex system, researchers will have to build the network itself. "Cellular Automata," each one a distinct computer program, really shape their own links. "

This approach, called "evolutionary engineering", provides silicon brain growth through connections. "The neural net grows when cellular automata send" signals of growth "to each other, then connect through synapses. "

(And you thought that genetic engineering is something to wonder about).

Consciousness Without a definition

Definition of consciousness turns out to be a more or less a relative, to search for the essence of an onion. Upon entering the new year, and perhaps entertain thoughts of return next century, the revision of consciousness is merely a philosophical exercise or scientific research. It is a duty, even a moral imperative to return to assess the nature of consciousness of this inherently makes the strategy through which humanity treats itself and all life. For me, and I suspect for many other, many changes are considered necessary for the human race update their highest potential. As in history, certainly some of these changes will produced by hard times. I remember Martin Luther King something that said: "I will never be what it should be, until you are what you should be." King even stated that it was the fabric of life intertwined that each one of us went to interdependent.

Perhaps it is the interrelated nature of all life, consciousness itself, which are interdependent. Maybe, just maybe, mankind will know only the higher your most noble person when offered the deepest respect for life. Perhaps the enthusiasm strengthened in search of a firm grip on these things called conscience eventually lead to relationship talk.

Thank you and well and happy!
