Two support systems that keep your brain

Why is it that some people freak out when presented with challenges in their lives while others handle them calmly and responsibly? This is a question that psychologists have pursued for years and it essentially boils down to coping skills. Now A new study suggests that this knowledge can also help protect you from developing dementia in their later years.

All freak from time to time, but we are talking about stress for the consumer become temporarily unable to cope with life. Some people experience this kind of pressure on an almost daily basis, while others rarely let life push them out of control. Most of us fall somewhere in between.

Related to this personality trait, the Swedish researchers followed 506 elderly people (average age 83) for several years and things seemed to predict who will develop dementia during the study. It perfected in a couple of things that were important when taken together. First, their level of social activity and second, their level of neuroticism, which this case can be considered as coping skills to reduce stress.

The new study found that those who were less socially active and had little capacity to cope were twice as likely to develop dementia. In this small cohort, either social isolation or poor skills in coping not was sufficient to increase risk, but the double blow was significant. However, previous studies have found increased negative effects of each independently.

Previous research has shown that social isolation puts people at higher risk of dementia and increase the risk of poor coping skills for depression. Importantly, depression and dementia seem to go hand in hand often in older people. So regardless of what is worse, or how the activity combine social and coping skills, it is likely that social support and have good coping skills is good for the brain in several ways.

The thing cool about these is that you can do something about it. Researchers call this kind of factors are modifiable risk factors ", ie you have control over them. You can increase your level of social activity and improve their coping skills across a variety of techniques. If you feel isolated, unless you live in the middle of nowhere without transportation, you can increase your level of social activity of it to get involved in their community. Over time you will make more friends and increase your social circle. Skills to cope, there are hundreds of books, classes and websites that can help you learn to manage stress more effectively.
